Hassan II Mosque Casablanca |

By far the most visited tourist attraction and significant building in Casablanca is the Grand Mosque Hassan II. After the death of His Royal Highness King Mohammed V in 1961, his son - Hassan II - wanted to build the most impressive mosque in the Arabic world, in honour of his father. And this he duly did.
Today those fortunate enough to see the result of this personal project of the King of Morocco are overwhelmed by the imposing profile of the finished building. Majestic and inspiring, the temple appears to rise out of the depths of the Atlantic Ocean. Indeed, one of the principle attractions of the Mosque is that two thirds have been constructed over water. This remarkable accomplishment was inspired by two verses of the Holy Koran, which state “The throne of God was upon the waters” and “From water have we created all life”.
The Hassan II Mosque is arguably the tallest religious building in the world and the second largest in area in the Muslim world, after the Al Haramayn Acharifan Mosque in Mecca.
Situated at the extreme north west point of what Muslims call Dar al Islam (the land of Islam), the Mosque offers itself as a meeting point for the diverse civilizations which surround Morocco; the African, European, Mediterranean and Arab cultures. |
